Classic eateries in Copenhagen

With its high number of Michelin-starred restaurants, Copenhagen is the Scandinavian capital of fine dining. Here are some of the city’s classics.

Søllerød Kro

This classic country inn is located in a beautiful setting just outside Copenhagen. It was first established in 1677, when the local vicar opened an inn for his parishioners. Today, the Michelin-starred restaurant is headed by Brian Mark Hansen and manager Jan Restorff. The cuisine is French-dominated, with a seasonal approach. “I want the best possible products. If they’re in France, I’ll get them there,” says Hansen. Søllerød Kro is open for lunch and dinner, and serves both à la carte and a set dinner and wine menu.

Marchal

The recently-refurbished luxury hotel d’Angleterre is a historic landmark in Copenhagen, dating back to 1755. The fine dining restaurant Marchal, located in the hotel, was opened in 2013 and has won three consecutive Michelin stars. It was recently taken over by Danish head chef Andreas Bagh, who continues the tradition of creating modern Nordic cuisine with classic French influences. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner in this stylish and relaxed setting, close to Nyhavn and Copenhagen’s best shopping districts.

Kong Hans Kaelder

This classic fine dining restaurant is situated in the cellar of Copenhagen’s oldest building. The restaurant opened 40 years ago and received its first Michelin star in 1983, which it held for 31 years until the head chef left the stove. The new head chef, Mark Lundgaard, reinvented both the décor and the menu in 2014, and went back to the roots of the French cuisine. This February, the restaurant was once again awarded a Michelin star. Kong Hans Kaelder serves both à la carte and a set menu. During the autumn, the menu will be fixed, in celebration of the restaurant’s 40th anniversary.
